A green tunnel through Maui
Bamboo forest, Haleakalā National Park, Maui, Hawaii
A volcano, a rainforest, and a bamboo grove? Haleakalā National Park on Maui has all three. Spanning Maui from its 10,023-foot summit to the coast, the park protects landscapes that change dramatically with elevation, rainfall, and temperature. It was established in 1916 as part of Hawaii National Park and became its own national park in 1961. The name Haleakalā translates to 'House of the Sun,' reflecting the Hawaiian mo'olelo of Māui capturing the sun to lengthen the day.
The park is home to more than 850 plant species, including the Haleakalā silversword, a plant found naturally only on the mountain, as well as native birds such as the nēnē and 'ua'u. In the Kīpahulu District, the Pīpīwai Trail heads through a wet forest to its famous bamboo grove. About a mile into the hike, the bamboo creates a canopy overhead, with its stalks making distinctive sounds when the wind moves through them.
