Into Galicia's hidden arches

Praia das Catedrais, Galicia, Spain

In Spain's far northwest, Galicia meets the Atlantic with force—its long coastline carved by waves into cliffs, inlets, and wave-cut platforms. Rain-fed hills and dense forests spill toward the sea, creating a landscape that feels closer to Ireland than southern Spain, with shifting skies and a distinctly Atlantic mood.

On the region's northern edge, the town of Ribadeo sits near the border with Asturias on the Bay of Biscay, where estuaries meet the open ocean. The coastline here shifts from rugged to surreal, with cliffs suddenly giving way to complex rock formations and hidden coves. Praia das Catedrais—'Beach of the Cathedrals'—takes its name from massive arches sculpted by the ocean over time, their shapes resembling the soaring architecture of stone cathedrals.

Visit when the tide drops. For a limited stretch of time, the exposed seabed becomes a walkable maze of stone—an ever-changing terrain that disappears again as the ocean surges back in, quickly reclaiming the sand and reshaping the shoreline.

Small footprint, big impact

Coral Reef Awareness Week

Imagine a city built by animals, glowing in the sunlight, and bustling with life beneath the waves. That is a coral reef. During Coral Reef Awareness Week, we celebrate these remarkable ecosystems and the countless species that depend on them.

Coral reefs cover less than 1% of the ocean floor, yet they support roughly 25% of all marine life. What look like colorful rocks are actually colonies of tiny animals called coral polyps. Together, they build vast limestone structures that can last for thousands of years. The Great Barrier Reef is the largest living structure on Earth, stretching more than 1,400 miles along Australia's coast.

Reefs are full of surprises. Some corals glow thanks to fluorescent proteins that act like natural sunscreen, while parrotfish help create sandy beaches by turning coral into fine sand. For a glimpse of reef life at its richest, look to Raja Ampat in Indonesia, pictured here, where more than 75% of known coral species thrive. They may live underwater, but their impact reaches far beyond the shore.

Hidden in plain arch

Santa Catalina Arch, Antigua, Guatemala

Some structures weren't meant to stand out—but time had other ideas. At sunrise, the Santa Catalina Arch glows over the streets of Antigua, Guatemala, its yellow facade catching the light just right as cobblestones stretch ahead and Agua Volcano rises in the distance. The arch was built in the 17th century to solve a practical problem: cloistered nuns needed to cross between convent buildings without being seen from the street. Privacy, not postcards, created one of Central America's most photographed landmarks. Irony holds up well over time.

Antigua itself leans into that contradiction. Declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1979, the city preserves its colonial grid while carrying the marks of earthquakes that repeatedly reshaped it. Seen here from the street, this structure built to conceal now frames the city. The volcano holds steady behind it, and the arch keeps doing what it has always done—connecting things quietly, intentionally or not.

The lunar perspective

International Moon Day

From the moon's cratered surface, Earth appears as a thin, glowing crescent against the darkness—a rare view that reverses our usual perspective. This stark landscape, shaped by billions of years of impacts, preserves a record of the early solar system. July 20 marks International Moon Day, commemorating the 1969 Apollo 11 landing, when humans first set foot on the lunar surface. Established by the United Nations in 2021, the day highlights past achievements and ongoing efforts to explore the moon.

Orbiting about 239,000 miles from Earth, the moon is Earth's only natural satellite. With almost no atmosphere, it experiences extreme temperature contrasts between sunlit heat and shadowed cold. Yet its influence reaches far beyond its surface—its gravity helps drive ocean tides on Earth, linking this quiet, airless world to everyday life. More than a destination for exploration, the moon remains a constant presence in our skies, connecting early observations of the night sky to ongoing exploration today.

Going full circle

Devil's Bridge, Kromlau, Saxony, Germany

Reflected in still water, the Rakotzbrücke—commonly known as the Devil's Bridge—forms a near-perfect stone circle in Saxony, Germany. Commissioned in 1860, the narrow basalt structure was carefully engineered so that its arch and reflection align to form a seamless ring when the lake is still. Made from locally sourced volcanic stone, it reflects precise design rather than practical function, its striking geometry intended purely for visual effect. A popular photo subject, it has also appeared in films, including 'The Matrix Resurrections' (2021). Today, the fragile bridge can only be admired from the shore, as crossing is prohibited to preserve it.

The bridge stands in Rhododendron Park Kromlau, an English-style landscape garden near the Polish border. Woodland paths wind past lakes and seasonal flower displays, with rhododendrons and azaleas creating vivid bursts of color in spring. At its calmest, water and stone align to form an enchanting illusion that appears to hover between reality and reflection.

A Greek escape

Vai, Crete, Greece

On the remote northeastern tip of the island of Crete in Greece lies Vai—a quiet corner far from the usual tourist trail. At the heart of this region is its beach, a broad curve of golden sand kissed by the calm, shallow waters of the Aegean. With sunbeds, umbrellas, and showers, it's an ideal spot for swimming, relaxing, or simply soaking in the peaceful atmosphere. But what truly sets Vai apart lies just behind the sand: Europe's largest natural palm grove. It is made up of over 5,000 Cretan date palm trees, a species unique to Crete and parts of Türkiye.

In the early 1970s, Vai was 'rediscovered' by hippies, who made it their haven after being moved out of the village of Matala. By the 1980s, however, increasing numbers of visitors and a lack of infrastructure had left the area littered and degraded. Recognizing its ecological and cultural value, authorities declared Vai a protected zone. Cleanup efforts restored the area, and today, Vai is one of Crete's most beautiful and unspoiled natural treasures. It's a reminder of how careful stewardship can bring a place back to life.

A waterfront chameleon

Navy Pier, Chicago, Illinois

Some places are built for a single purpose; others keep reinventing themselves. Navy Pier in Chicago, Illinois, falls into the second category. The structure stretches more than 3,000 feet into the lake and was designed as part of Edward H. Bennett's and Daniel Burnham's 1909 Plan of Chicago. Opened in 1916, the pier was built for shipping, recreation, and passenger travel on Lake Michigan. It was renamed Navy Pier in honor of World War I naval veterans.

Step outside today and the surroundings feel very different. The skyline fills the view, while Lake Michigan stretches far beyond the pier. On clear days, the contrast between glass towers and open water is hard to miss.

The pier is now home to parks, performance spaces, restaurants, family attractions, a museum, and waterfront activities. Many visitors know the Centennial Wheel, but fewer know that the pier once housed university students attending classes after World War II. One structure, many lives. That's an unusual resume for a Chicago landmark.

The reward after the climb

Marie Lake, John Muir Wilderness near Bishop, California

If mountains could keep a record of the past, the John Muir Wilderness near Bishop, California, would have plenty to share. Its valleys, lakes, and granite formations reveal a history shaped over millions of years. Established in 1964, this vast protected area spans more than 650,000 acres of the Sierra Nevada and is named after naturalist John Muir. Today, parts of the Pacific Crest Trail and John Muir Trail pass through the area, drawing hikers into one of the largest high-elevation wilderness regions in the contiguous United States.

Not far from Bishop, Marie Lake sits at an elevation of about 10,550 feet and is often reached by backpackers crossing Selden Pass. Its clear water reflects the surrounding granite, creating one of the most photographed spots along the trail. Life at these elevations is adapted to a brief growing season. Whitebark and lodgepole pines grow across the landscape, while marmots, golden trout, Clark's nutcrackers, black bears, pikas, and California bighorn sheep remain part of the ecosystem.

Born to rock

International Rock Day

International Rock Day, observed on July 13, celebrates the geologic building blocks beneath our feet and encourages curiosity about how rocks shape Earth's landscapes and history. From ancient tools to modern mineral uses, these solid structures hold clues to volcanic eruptions, shifting continents, and life over millions of years. Few places display that story as vividly as Antelope Canyon, a narrow slot canyon on Navajo Nation land east of Page, Arizona. Carved from Navajo Sandstone by flash floods and erosion, its smooth, flowing walls reveal how water and sediment sculpt rock over time. Sunlight filters through the canyon's narrow openings, creating beams of light that dance across red and orange stone, shaped by centuries of natural forces. On International Rock Day, landscapes like this turn geology into a living gallery—inviting visitors to see rocks not as static objects, but as evolving records of our planet's dynamic past.

A wilder side of Maine

Katahdin Woods and Waters National Monument, Maine

If you're looking for Maine at its most untamed, this is it. Katahdin Woods and Waters National Monument stretches across about 87,500 acres of the raw North Woods—where quiet ponds mirror the sky and dense forests seem to swallow sound.

Don't expect crowds or convenience. This is a place where dirt roads rattle your car and cell service disappears quickly. But that's the point. Step out beside a still pond or drift along the East Branch of the Penobscot River, and the wilderness feels immediate, almost personal.

Established in 2016, the monument protects a landscape shaped by logging and is now being slowly reclaimed by nature. Spruce and birch forests shelter moose, black bears, and elusive Canada lynx, while remote waters hold wild brook trout. Look west and you may glimpse Mount Katahdin rising beyond the trees. Stay after sunset and the sky takes over—this is an International Dark Sky Sanctuary, where stars burn bright above the forest.
