Where Brittany meets the tide

Port de Saint-Goustan, Auray, Brittany, France

In France, Port de Saint-Goustan sits just below Auray's upper town, where a small inlet meets the Gulf of Morbihan estuary. The harbor lies at the confluence of the Auray and Loc'h rivers, creating its sheltered, storybook setting. In the 13th century, the Dukes of Brittany built a bridge, a port, and a castle here; the fortress has vanished, but cobbled quays, narrow lanes, and timber-framed houses still line the water. From Place de la République, Rue du Château passes art studios and galleries down to the waterfront; ramps along the Loc'h, built on old fortifications, open views across the port. Cross the four-arched stone bridge to Place Saint-Sauveur, then climb toward Saint-Gildas Church, where the town rises above the harbor. The quay also marks a transatlantic moment: Benjamin Franklin arrived here in 1776, and a dock now bears his name. Today, cafés and small boats fill the scene, while nearby Auray hosts a well-known weekly market and lively summer events.

Aerial view of land and ocean, Victoria, Australia

Victoria, a southeastern state of Australia, extends along more than 1,000 miles of coastline shaped by the Southern Ocean. From above, its beaches appear as sweeping bands of pale sand edged by turquoise waters and rugged cliffs. This dynamic interaction of land and sea defines much of the region's appeal. The famous Great Ocean Road traces roughly 150 miles of this shoreline, winding past popular surf spots, forested headlands, and seaside towns.

One of its most striking sights is the Twelve Apostles, towering limestone stacks formed over millions of years by wind and waves. Nearby stretches feature powerful surf breaks like Bells Beach and quieter coves where coastal vegetation meets open sand. Beyond the shore, farmland and national parks provide contrast, supporting wildlife and scenic trails. Victoria's capital, Melbourne, sits on Port Phillip Bay, anchoring a state known for both cultural energy and natural variety, from alpine peaks to untamed coastlines.

Tradition in every step

Rice fields at Sapa, Lào Cai, Vietnam

Sunlight cuts through drifting clouds and settles on the terraced slopes of Sapa, where rice fields cascade down the mountainsides like a living staircase. Located in Vietnam's Lào Cai province, this highland region is shaped as much by human hands as by nature. Generations of farmers from local ethnic communities such as the Hmong have carved and maintained these terraces for centuries, guiding water across steep hillsides to sustain each growing season.

Each level holds a thin layer of water that reflects the sky, nourishing young rice plants before the fields shift from vivid green to warm gold at harvest. Mist moves through the valleys, revealing new layers of hills and winding paths, creating a sense of constant change beneath Fansipan, Indochina's highest peak. Though remote, Sapa has become an increasingly popular destination, drawing visitors who come for the striking scenery and leave with a deeper appreciation for a place still shaped by tradition.

Echoes of a volcanic past

Sunrise at Lake Atitlán, Guatemala

Set in Guatemala's western highlands, Lake Atitlán fills a vast volcanic caldera. Its deep blue waters are framed by steep crater walls and the cone-shaped volcanoes Atitlán, Tolimán, and San Pedro. Wooden piers stretch into the still lake, emphasizing the contrast between its calm surface and the rugged terrain shaped by volcanic activity.

Formed about 84,000 years ago after a massive eruption, the lake is often considered the deepest in Central America, reaching depths of roughly 1,100 feet. Steep escarpments encircle the basin, enclosing the water in a dramatic natural amphitheater that echoes its explosive origins.

Beneath the surface lie traces of submerged Maya sites more than 1,500 years old, including remnants of ceremonial structures that hint at a once-thriving lakeside culture. Along the shore, Kaqchikel and Tz'utujil Maya communities continue to preserve their languages and weaving traditions, their daily lives still closely tied to the rhythms of this highland landscape.

A city written in centuries

Syracuse, Sicily, Italy

Founded by Greek settlers from Corinth around 734 BCE, the Italian city of Syracuse, on the island of Sicily, grew into one of the ancient Mediterranean's great powers and is now part of a UNESCO World Heritage Site, 'Syracuse and the Rocky Necropolis of Pantalica.' It is forever linked to Archimedes, whose genius still shapes its identity, and to Plato, who came to Syracuse hoping philosophy might shape political life. That layered past still feels tangible at Castello Maniace, a seafront fortress built for Holy Roman Emperor Frederick II in the 13th century, which can still be admired today.

In 2009, the castle provided the setting for the 'Carta di Siracusa,' a document centered on biodiversity and the relationship between nature, culture, and development. The city has also offered filmmakers a ready-made stage, from 'Casanova '70,' starring Marcello Mastroianni, to 'Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny.' Here, Italy is more than sunshine, wine, and good food: it is history still conjugated in the present.

Sea of purple

Lavender rows, Plateau de Valensole, Provence, France

In southeastern France, on the Valensole Plateau, summer arrives in waves of purple and blue. Valensole—one of the largest plateaus in the region—lies in the Verdon Regional Natural Park between the Durance and Asse valleys, near the Gorges du Verdon and its lakes. From mid-June to early July, depending on altitude and weather, lavender and lavandin bloom and transform the landscape into one of Provence's most recognizable sights. The air carries a sharp, dry, and unmistakably Mediterranean scent.

Beyond the postcard-worthy view, lavender is an evergreen shrub in the mint family, native to lands bordering the Mediterranean. Its fragrance comes from oil glands on the flowers, leaves, and stems, which is why it has long been valued for perfumes, soaps, sachets, and essential oils distilled from the plant. The ancient Romans even used lavender in their baths. It also attracts bees and other pollinators, adding a steady hum to the fields. In Valensole, beauty is agricultural, aromatic, and alive—rooted in climate, cultivation, and tradition.

The poetry of vanishing light

Fireflies glowing above a stream, Okayama Prefecture, Japan

In Okayama Prefecture, when humid air settles over a stream, hotaru—Japan's fireflies—begin signaling. On warm, windless evenings, they often start glowing about two hours after sunset under favorable conditions, inviting silence beside water.

Fireflies aren't flies but beetles, and most species stay near water—ponds, streams, marshes, and rivers. By day they hide low in the grass; after dark they climb vegetation and take flight, flashing to find a mate. Their light comes from a chemical reaction in the abdomen, and species-specific timing helps partners recognize the right signal. Their young live a quieter, hungrier life: larvae are carnivores that feed on soft-bodied prey such as snails and slugs. Adults may eat insects, nectar, or pollen.

In Japan, watching them—hotaru-gari—has deep roots. Heian-era (794–1185) writers like Sei Shōnagon wrote about fireflies, and later literature and ukiyo-e art—a traditional form of woodblock prints and paintings—used their brief light to evoke impermanence.

Inside Esna's sacred universe

Ceiling of the Temple of Esna, Egypt

At the Temple of Esna, south of Luxor, Egypt, visitors enter a vivid world devoted to Khnum, the ram-headed god believed to have molded humanity from Nile clay. Built mainly during the Ptolemaic and Roman eras, the temple's surviving hall is supported by 24 towering columns, each carved with intricate reliefs and ritual texts honoring various deities.

In ancient times, entry was tightly controlled. Priests had to shave their entire bodies, trim their fingernails, undergo repeated ritual purification, and wear only linen garments before passing inside. They also avoided certain foods to ensure cleanliness before conducting offerings and ceremonies for Khnum.

Above them, the ceiling—like the one shown—unfolds into a richly decorated sky, filled with astronomical scenes, zodiacal symbols, and sacred figures painted in vivid colors. These carvings weren't merely decorative: together, the pillars and ceiling guided worshippers through a symbolic universe where divine order, ritual practice, and cosmic cycles were inseparably linked.

Canada, carved by the Atlantic

Canada Day

On July 1, Canada celebrates its national day, marking the events of 1867, when the British North America Act (now called the Constitution Act, 1867) united three British colonies into one Dominion.

In 1879, July 1 became a federal holiday, originally called Dominion Day before being renamed Canada Day in 1982. Today, people gather across the country for concerts, community events, and fireworks—celebrations that reflect a shared sense of identity and history.

Today's image takes us to Dungeon Provincial Park on the rugged coast of Newfoundland and Labrador, where nature tells a much older story. Atlantic waves carved a sea cave with two openings, gradually widening it until the roof gave way. What remains is a striking collapsed formation known as a 'gloup,' surrounded by steep cliffs and crashing surf. Boardwalks and viewing platforms allow visitors to take in the scene, while nearby trails offer sweeping ocean views. This dramatic coastline highlights the natural forces that are still shaping Canada's landscape today.
