Born of glaciers

The blue, glacier-fed waters of the Kasilof River, Alaska

Seen from above, the Kasilof River winds like a ribbon of turquoise through Alaska's Kenai Peninsula. The vivid blue water comes from glacial silt carried downstream from Tustumena Lake, one of the largest freshwater lakes in the state. Flowing about 17 miles before emptying into Cook Inlet, the river is shorter than its famous neighbor, the Kenai, but no less remarkable.

The Kasilof begins in a landscape shaped by ice and remains closely tied to the region's fishing culture. Long an important resource for the Dena'ina people, the river later became central to commercial, subsistence, and recreational fishing. Today, anglers come for salmon runs, while visitors explore nearby recreation sites, campgrounds, and nature trails. The community of Kasilof itself is a small fishing town on the peninsula's west coast, where river, forest, and estuary habitats support abundant wildlife. Whether viewed from a drift boat or from the air, the Kasilof offers a striking glimpse of Alaska's glacial origins and enduring connection to the water.

History with a view

Amber Fort near Jaipur, Rajasthan, India

Most first-time visitors know Jaipur, in Rajasthan, India, as the Pink City, but the earlier royal capital was centered on Amber Fort. That's where much of the dynasty's political and architectural history was shaped. The fort developed over more than a century, beginning under Raja Man Singh I in 1592 and continuing under later Kachwaha rulers who controlled the kingdom that eventually became Jaipur State. The royal family moved to the newly planned city of Jaipur in 1727, but Amber continued to serve ceremonial functions.

Architecturally, the fort combines defensive Rajput features with Mughal-inspired arches, courtyards, painted surfaces, and marble detailing. The Sattais Katcheri Hall, seen in the image, takes its name from its 27 pillars. The structure is associated with administrative purposes. The fort also includes audience halls, royal courtyards, and the ornate Sheesh Mahal. Explore the sprawling complex, experience the warmth of 'Padharo Sa,' and save room for a plate of dal baati churma—baked wheat dumplings, lentils, and a sweet crumbly dessert.

National Public Lands Day

What do a bear's ears, a house on fire, and a road packed with hairpin turns have in common? They're all part of the story of southeastern Utah's public lands.

On National Public Lands Day, Cedar Mesa and nearby Muley Point offer a remarkable mix of ancient history and high-desert scenery. Bears Ears National Monument encompasses important cultural and natural resources, including archaeological sites that reflect thousands of years of human history. Its name comes from twin buttes that resemble a bear's ears.

Rising to roughly 6,500 feet, Cedar Mesa is carved by deep canyons, including Grand Gulch, an archaeological treasure trove. Mule Canyon's House on Fire gets its name from sandstone that glows orange in morning light. Nearby Muley Point overlooks the San Juan River, Valley of the Gods, Monument Valley, and Navajo Mountain. Reaching it via the steep, unpaved Moki Dugway gives new meaning to the word 'switchback.'

When the moon joins the party

Mid-Autumn Festival

What if the full moon were the guest of honor at your family dinner? That is the idea behind the Mid-Autumn Festival, also known as the Moon Festival. Celebrated on the 15th day of the eighth lunar month, it is one of the most important festivals in Chinese culture. Its roots trace back more than 3,000 years to moon-honoring rituals during the Zhou Dynasty. Its best-known legend tells of Chang'e, who drank an elixir of immortality and rose to the moon.

Mooncakes are the celebration's signature treat. Their round shape symbolizes completeness and reunion. Folklore claims that rebels once hid secret messages to overthrow the Mongol rulers inside mooncakes during the Yuan Dynasty.

The festival has also inspired matchmaking customs, earning comparisons to a lunar Valentine's Day. And while the Mid-Autumn moon is celebrated for its brightness, science says it is not necessarily the year's brightest. With legends, lanterns, and mooncakes, this festival has plenty to look up to.

Ash meets splash

Black lava beach, El Golfo, Lanzarote, Canary Islands, Spain

On Lanzarote, part of Spain's Canary Islands, geology got carried away. Dark sand meets the Atlantic beneath cliffs streaked with ocher and rust, the handiwork of volcanic activity spanning millions of years. One chapter of this story arrived remarkably recently: between 1730 and 1736, numerous vents opened across Lanzarote, sending lava over dozens of square miles and burying roads, villages, and farmland.

The beach in the image sits beside El Golfo, a tiny fishing village on the island's western shore. The settlement borders Los Volcanes Natural Park, while boats, seafood restaurants, and crashing waves carry on as if this scenery were perfectly ordinary. Nearby, the famous green lagoon Charco de los Clicos occupies a partially collapsed volcanic crater linked to the sea through underground fissures. Its improbable emerald color comes partly from algae, bringing green water, black sand, and blue sea into one strikingly vivid frame. No filter required. El Golfo comes with its own color palette.

Golden leaves of the Autumn Equinox

The golden season

Autumn equinox

The autumn equinox marks a turning point in the Northern Hemisphere. Occurring each September, it is the moment when the sun crosses the equator heading south, and day and night are nearly equal in length. After this celestial balance, daylight gradually shrinks as the journey toward winter begins.

Near Guardsman Pass in Utah, the change is written across the mountainsides in gold. Many of the aspens coloring the American West are quaking aspens, the most widely distributed native tree species in North America. What appears to be a forest of individuals is often something else entirely: many aspens grow in connected colonies, with trunks emerging from a shared root network and carrying the same genetic code as their neighbors.

Even as their leaves turn yellow and fall, much of the organism remains alive below ground. Aspens can persist through winter via their root systems, quietly preparing for future growth. The autumn equinox may signal summer's end, but in these remarkable groves, life never truly pauses.

The tower that won Paris over

Eiffel Tower at sunset, Paris, France

No other city is nearly as romanticized as Paris. Yet the French capital's history has not always been as rosy as the sunset glowing behind the Eiffel Tower. Built for the 1889 Exposition Universelle, or the World's Fair, which marked the centennial of the start of the French Revolution, the tower was originally intended to serve as the fair's entrance centerpiece. Designed by engineer Gustave Eiffel and his team, the iron landmark rose nearly 1,000 feet above the Champ de Mars and became the tallest structure in the world at the time.

Many locals criticized the bold design, but it quickly captured the public's imagination. During the World's Fair, millions came to see the monument and enjoy panoramic views unlike any they had experienced before.

Today, visitors can stroll along the Seine and explore old neighborhoods and museums throughout a city that continues to reinvent itself. As evening falls and the Eiffel Tower glows against the night sky, it remains a powerful symbol of French creativity, ambition, and resilience.

Through the heart of the pass

Winnats Pass, Peak District National Park, England

A long, winding road cuts through rocks more than 300 million years old in England's Peak District. As if that geological timescale were not remarkable enough, the road passes through Winnats Pass, a narrow limestone gorge whose towering cliffs reveal the ancient seas that once covered this part of Britain.

Yet Winnats Pass is only one highlight of the Peak District National Park, Britain's first national park. Here, green limestone valleys give way to sweeping gritstone moorlands, while hidden cave systems run beneath the hills. Visitors can hike along dramatic ridges, explore underground caverns once worked by lead miners, and wander through picturesque communities such as Castleton and Bakewell. Few places in England pack so much geological diversity and outdoor adventure into a single landscape. Whether viewed from a windswept hilltop or from the depths of a cavern, the Peak District is a place where every turn reveals something new.

A toast to the harvest

Santenay wine region, Côte de Beaune, Burgundy, France

Each year, late summer and early fall bring one of France's most anticipated traditions: the 'vendanges,' the grape-picking season. The timing varies from one wine region to another and depends on weather conditions, sun exposure, and the ripeness of the fruit. For many vineyards, harvest is still a hands-on effort, with teams carefully selecting bunches destined for some of the country's most celebrated wines.

The scene is especially striking in Santenay, at the southern end of Burgundy's Côte de Beaune. Here, rows of vines stretch across rolling hills beneath the Sorine windmill, a restored 19th-century landmark that overlooks the surrounding countryside and vineyards, as seen in today's image.

Harvesting grapes has shaped French life for centuries. Its importance even echoes in the French Republican calendar, which named its opening month after the gathering of the crop—a reminder of how deeply winemaking is woven into the nation's history. As baskets fill and the vineyards glow with autumn color, the season blends agriculture, heritage, and celebration into a uniquely French ritual.
