Puzzled? Follow the trail

Puzzlewood, Forest of Dean, Gloucestershire, England

What if a forest could keep you guessing at every turn? At Puzzlewood, near Coleford in the Forest of Dean, England, winding paths lead through twisted trees, moss-covered rocks, and deep stone ravines. Its unusual rock formations, known as scowles, are natural geological features that were exposed and modified over time and later exploited for iron ore mining during the Roman period and possibly earlier. In 1848, a worker discovered more than 3,000 Roman-era coins hidden in earthenware jars inside a rock cavity, turning the woodland into a real-life treasure hunt.

Around 1.5 miles of paths, wooden bridges, and stone walkways guide visitors through the rugged landscape. Puzzlewood has also starred on screen, appearing in 'Star Wars: The Force Awakens,' 'Doctor Who,' 'Merlin,' and 'Cursed.' Local lore links its gnarled trees and mysterious atmosphere to J.R.R. Tolkien's Middle-earth forests, although there is no definitive proof.

A wilder side of Maine

Katahdin Woods and Waters National Monument, Maine

If you're looking for Maine at its most untamed, this is it. Katahdin Woods and Waters National Monument stretches across about 87,500 acres of the raw North Woods—where quiet ponds mirror the sky and dense forests seem to swallow sound.

Don't expect crowds or convenience. This is a place where dirt roads rattle your car and cell service disappears quickly. But that's the point. Step out beside a still pond or drift along the East Branch of the Penobscot River, and the wilderness feels immediate, almost personal.

Established in 2016, the monument protects a landscape shaped by logging and is now being slowly reclaimed by nature. Spruce and birch forests shelter moose, black bears, and elusive Canada lynx, while remote waters hold wild brook trout. Look west and you may glimpse Mount Katahdin rising beyond the trees. Stay after sunset and the sky takes over—this is an International Dark Sky Sanctuary, where stars burn bright above the forest.

Where roots run wild

International Day of Forests

If Earth had a maintenance crew, forests would be spearheading it. They absorb carbon emissions, reduce soil erosion, safeguard biodiversity, influence rainfall, and help maintain clean water supplies. They still cover about 31% of the world's land area, yet their continued decline shows how vulnerable these natural systems have become. Vast stretches continue to be cleared for agriculture, infrastructure, and resource extraction, weakening ecosystems at an alarming rate.

The International Day of Forests, observed every March 21, was established by the United Nations in 2012 to raise awareness and inspire meaningful action. Governments, organizations, and communities mark the day by planting trees, sharing research, and promoting sustainable forestry. Why does it matter? Because forest health directly supports climate stability, biodiversity protection, and global food security.

Romania's Letea Forest, featured in today's image, highlights conservation in action. Part of the Danube Delta Biosphere Reserve, it grows on marine sand formations shaped by shifting waters and winds. Safeguarding forests like Letea helps ensure future generations inherit ecosystems that still endure.

The trails' call

National Take a Hike Day

National Take a Hike Day is more than a date—it's an invitation to step away from screens and into the rhythm of nature. Created by the American Hiking Society, this day celebrates the simple act of walking under open skies and reminds us that health and happiness often begin with a single stride. Across 60,000 miles of US trails, hikers rediscover the quiet magic of forests, the strength in their own breath, and the promise of unspoiled landscapes.

And then there's Shenandoah National Park, Virginia's mountain jewel. Here, the Blue Ridge Mountains wear their finest colors—golden hickories, crimson maples, and oaks brushed in bronze. By November, the air turns crisp, and the last embers of fall cling to the hillsides like whispered secrets. Skyline Drive winds for 105 miles, offering vistas where clouds drift like thoughts across endless valleys. Trails—more than 500 miles of them—lead to places where waterfalls tumble and summits greet the horizon. Stony Man, Hawksbill, Dark Hollow Falls—each a poem written in stone and leaf, waiting for footsteps to rhyme with the wind.

Orange you glad it's fall?

Peña Roya beech forest, Moncayo Natural Park, Aragon, Spain

Spain's Aragon region isn't exactly famous for its forests—it's more 'sun and scrub' than 'shade and shuffle.' And yet, climb the slopes of Moncayo and you'll walk straight into a twist ending: a dense, whispering beech forest. The mountain is a climate roller coaster. At the bottom? Mediterranean shrubs. Midway up? Oaks and pines. Push further? Suddenly you're in Peña Roya, a beech wonderland that seems to say, 'Surprise, leaf it to me!'

Fall is their show-off season. The forest becomes a patchwork quilt of red, gold, and orange, while hikers crunch happily through the leaves. Deer tiptoe through the trees, wild boar snuffle in the undergrowth, and birds like Eurasian goshawks and golden eagles supply the soundtrack. And just when you think it's all about trees, Moncayo reminds you of its human side: monasteries tucked into the mountainside, hermitages clinging to rocks, and villages that once treated the forest as their pantry. Today, people come not for timber, but for trails, photos, and that sweet mountain air.

Coastal quiet, untamed life

Maritime forest in Cumberland Island National Seashore, Georgia

Before you hit the beach, you'll hear it—the rustle of leaves in salty air, the creak of twisted trunks, the hush of an old world. Welcome to the maritime forest of Cumberland Island National Seashore on the southernmost stretch of Georgia's Atlantic coast. Salt spray, sandy soil, hurricanes? The trees here stand their ground. Live oaks bend but don't break. Saw palmettos crowd the ground like leafy bodyguards, while Spanish moss hangs from branches like nature's fringe. This maritime forest is one of the best remaining examples of this rare habitat in the United States. Thanks to its national seashore status, the island has been spared from the concrete creep seen on other coastlines.

What you see here is the forest as it's been for centuries—a few ruins from the days of Scottish American industrialist Thomas Carnegie and the occasional feral horses grazing through. The horses are descendants of animals left by settlers long gone, and they're now unofficial mascots of the area. Alongside them, you might spot armadillos digging through the undergrowth, woodpeckers hammering tree trunks, or raccoons engaging in tiny heists. Trails like the South End Trail or the Parallel Trail weave through dense foliage, sometimes giving glimpses of marshes or hidden historic sites. So next time you think of the coast, remember: the real drama isn't always on the shore. Sometimes, it's rooted just beyond the dunes.

Taking the high road

National Trails Day

Today, we celebrate the paths that connect us with nature and adventure. Angeles National Forest in Southern California is home to towering pines and rugged ridgelines, and hosts a stretch of the legendary Pacific Crest Trail (PCT). Winding over about 2,650 miles from Mexico to Canada, the PCT is the ultimate thru-hiking dream. Designated a National Scenic Trail in 1968, it traverses seven national parks, 25 national forests, and provides a unique lens through which to experience the dramatic landscapes of the American West. But you don't need to go the distance to enjoy its magic. In Southern California, portions of the trail through the San Gabriel Mountains offer great views and rewarding day hikes.

This year, National Trails Day isn't just about adventure, it's also about stewardship. These trails need our love and care to stay wild and walkable. So, bring a trash bag, join a cleanup drive, or just spread the word about keeping trails pristine and thriving for generations to come.

Mysterious woods by the sea

Gespensterwald, Nienhagen, Germany

On Germany's Baltic coast lies the Gespensterwald, which means 'Ghost Forest,' seen in today's image. This spine-tingling forest covers about 445 acres, with its gnarled beech, hornbeam, ash, and oak trees twisting toward the sky. The salty sea air, wind, and the moist climate helped mold the trees' distorted shapes, which look particularly haunting at night. Visitors to this forest in the Mecklenburg-West Pomerania region can brave the trails alone or sign up for a storytelling session where actors dressed as ghosts bring local legends and folktales to life. Photographers and nature enthusiasts alike find inspiration in the eerie silhouettes etched against the sky, immortalized in countless pictures.

Stairway to nowhere

Madame Sherri Forest, New Hampshire

Madame Sherri Forest in Chesterfield, New Hampshire, is a captivating destination steeped in history and natural beauty. It was once the site of an extravagant house built in the 1930s by Madame Antoinette Sherri, a flamboyant 1920s costume designer known for her lavish parties. Madame Sherri's dramatic arrivals in town, often in a chauffeur-driven Packard, draped in furs, became the talk of the locals. As her fortune declined, her 'castle' fell into disrepair and was vandalized. In 1959, she returned to find her property in ruins and never came back. A fire destroyed the house in 1963, leaving behind only the stone foundation, an iconic staircase, and a large fireplace leading to a lone chimney.

Today, the forest where her house once stood spans over 500 acres and offers scenic hiking trails through woodlands, hemlock groves, and around peaceful brooks, a picturesque setting for outdoor enthusiasts. Managed by the Society for the Protection of New Hampshire Forests, this area was named in honor of Madame Sherri, and it also includes trails that lead to the ruins of her former estate. So, while the house was originally separate from the forest, the two are now intricately entwined.

Glenariff Forest Park, Northern Ireland, UK

This storybook setting is Glenariff Forest Park in County Antrim, Northern Ireland, which spans nearly 3,000 acres of woodland and waterfalls. Among its popular walking trails is the Waterfall Walkway, a 3-mile trail that passes through a national nature reserve and past the Ess-na-Crub and Ess-na-Larach waterfalls. Glenariff is home to a rich diversity of wildlife including red squirrels, pine martens, and badgers. Birdwatchers will be delighted by willow warblers, chiffchaffs, and kingfishers. The flora is just as impressive, with trees like the old beech pictured here, oaks, birches, and rowans creating a lush canopy. It's the perfect spot for a bit of soul-searching beneath ancient branches in this beautiful landscape known as the 'Queen of the Glens.'
