From tracks to tides

Navy Pier, Chicago, Illinois

Some places are built for a single purpose; others keep reinventing themselves. Navy Pier in Chicago, Illinois, falls into the second category. The structure stretches more than 3,000 feet into the lake and was designed as part of Edward H. Bennett's and Daniel Burnham's 1909 Plan of Chicago. Opened in 1916, the pier was built for shipping, recreation, and passenger travel on Lake Michigan. It was renamed Navy Pier in honor of World War I naval veterans.

Step outside today and the surroundings feel very different. The skyline fills the view, while Lake Michigan stretches far beyond the pier. On clear days, the contrast between glass towers and open water is hard to miss.

The pier is now home to parks, performance spaces, restaurants, family attractions, a museum, and waterfront activities. Many visitors know the Centennial Wheel, but fewer know that the pier once housed university students attending classes after World War II. One structure, many lives. That's an unusual resume for a Chicago landmark.

Standing the test of tide

Dunquin Pier, County Kerry, Ireland

This stunning view—where the sky meets the open waters of the Atlantic—is accessible only by foot. Tucked away on Ireland's wild and beautiful Dingle Peninsula, Dunquin Pier is one of the most photogenic spots in County Kerry. The small pier is famous for its winding, serpentine path that zigzags dramatically down the cliffside like a ribbon. These steep curves aren't just for the thrill—they're the only way to reach the pier below, where boats depart for the remote Blasket Islands.

The nearby village of Dunquin (Dún Chaoin in Irish) is Ireland's westernmost settlement, offering sweeping views and a deep connection to Irish heritage. With a population of just over 100, Dunquin is known for its strong Gaelic traditions, storytelling, and ties to the Blasket Island writers. Visitors often stop at the Blasket Centre, a cultural museum that tells the story of island life and emigration. Whether you're drawn by the dramatic landscape or the rich cultural heritage, Dunquin offers a uniquely Irish experience that feels both timeless and unforgettable.

Christmas tree on Crystal Pier, San Diego, California

Santa has plenty of runway to land his sleigh, but good luck trying to find a chimney. Today, we're getting ready for Christmas at Pacific Beach in San Diego, California. While it might not snow here, there's still plenty of yuletide spirit leading up to Christmas in sunny Southern California. Among many beautiful examples on San Diego's Christmas Tree Trail is the 20-foot tree at the end of a festively decorated Crystal Pier.

Stretching out 872 feet into the water, the pier has been a Pacific Beach icon since 1927. Once home to a ballroom and carnival-like midway, Crystal Pier has since become a mellower vacation destination and one of the few places on the West Coast with rental accommodations over the ocean. Open to the public during the day and 24/7 for hotel guests, the pier is an ideal place to take in panoramic coastal views, watch whales and surfers at play, do some fishing, or bathe in glorious coastal sunsets. Pacific Beach also has a lively restaurant, bar, and club scene if eggnog isn't your thing. There are certainly colder places to spend Christmas, but perhaps no place cooler than Crystal Pier.

Pier today ...

Huntington Beach Pier, California, at sunset

In today's image, we see the sun disappearing below the pier at Huntington Beach, California. First built in 1902, the pier was damaged by a storm and had to be rebuilt just nine years later. During World War II, a submarine lookout post was installed on the pier to help with the war effort. These days, it's a popular spot for fishing and watching surfers ride the waves out in the Pacific Ocean.

Huntington Beach has been nicknamed Surf City, and it's not hard to see why. Its 9.5-mile-long sandy beach gets great waves all year round. And it is home to the International Surf Museum, where visitors can learn about the history of the sport and see historic surfboards. Whether you're hitting the waves or watching from the pier, Huntington Beach is a peerless destination.

The symbols of Rio

Sugarloaf Mountain

Perhaps one of the most internationally recognized parts of Brazil, Sugarloaf Mountain overlooks the surrounding waters of Guanabara Bay and the bustling city of Rio de Janeiro. A famous cable car connects Urca – the first hill (215 metres) on the way up to Sugarloaf Mountain – with the mountain itself, which reaches a height of 396 metres above the harbour. Together they form the Sugarloaf Mountain and Urca Hill Natural Monument which, along with the Christ the Redeemer statue, are the city's most famous postcard images. The vehicle, which also connects the two hills to Praia Vermelha, was conceived in 1908 and opened in 1912. It was the first cable car in the country and the third in the world.

In today's image, the impressive mountain scenery and docked yachts are reflected in the waters of Marina da Glória. Nestled between Sugarloaf and Corcovado Mountains, Marina da Glória is one of the city’s most popular waterfront destinations. The venue hosted sailing competitions at the Rio 2016 Olympic and Paralympic Games and now receives around 1.3 million visitors a year. The marina is one of South America’s premier charter destinations and can accommodate yachts measuring up to 60 meters in length. From here you can explore Flamengo Park, the largest public park and recreation area within the city, as well as enjoy some of the best views of Sugarloaf Mountain.

End of the pier?

This peaceful but derelict pier, on England’s south-west coast, was a hub of activity back in its heyday. Designed by the famous pier builder Eugenius Birch, Birnbeck Pier – sometimes called the Old Pier – opened in Weston-super-Mare in 1867. Victorian day trippers would arrive on steamships to enjoy fairground rides, a travelling cinema and skating rink. Welsh visitors would turn up to buy a drink in the pier’s bars on a Sunday, a day when the sale of alcohol was banned over the border. You can still see the old lifeboat house and slipway on Birnbeck Island, a reminder of its history as a base for the RNLI. The Bristol Channel has the second highest tidal range in the world and the island offered a good launching point for its lifeboats, which might otherwise have been cut off by mudflats at lower tides.

Birnbeck Pier is the only British pier which connects the mainland to an island, and its light structure, based on 15 groups of iron columns, has helped it weather 150 years of battering by the sea. But the end of paddle steamers in the 1970s, the opening of the Severn Bridge linking England to Wales, the boom in foreign holidays and competition from a rival pier marked the beginning of the end for the Old Pier which finally closed to the public in 1994. The elements have long battered the Grade II listed structure and it was added to Historic England’s at-risk register in 1999. Local campaigners are trying to save it from collapse and the RNLI has expressed an interest in returning to the island if efforts by North Somerset Council to purchase the pier are successful.
