Where the land stares back

Dragon's Eye, Uttakleiv Beach, Norway

Dragon's Eye sounds like something pulled from legend, and standing on Norway's Uttakleiv Beach in the Lofoten Islands, it's easy to see why. The formation, carved into ancient rock and framed by sand and sea, looks uncannily alive, as though the land itself is watching you. Shaped over thousands of years by ice and water, it has become one of the region's most captivating sights.

Despite its mythic name, the Dragon's Eye is actually a glacial pothole. It is a circular hollow sculpted into metamorphic rocks by turbulent meltwater flowing beneath the vast Fennoscandian Ice Sheet around 20,000 years ago. Under intense pressure, water carrying sand and stones ground into the bedrock, gradually eroding smooth-walled depressions. When the ice retreated roughly 16,000 years ago, these features were revealed, leaving behind formations like the Dragon's Eye, complete with a boulder—or 'pupil'—settled at its center.

Today, the Eye continues to shift with the elements. Depending on the tide, waves flood the hollow or strip it bare, while algae and light constantly reshape its expression, blurring the line between legend and landscape.

Tiny village, big views

The fishing village of Reine, Norway

Tucked deep within Norway's Arctic Circle, Reine feels like the kind of place you see on a postcard and assume can't possibly be real. But it is. This small fishing village of about 300 residents is known for its steep mountains, calm fjords, and bright red rorbuer—traditional fishermen's cabins—that dot the shoreline. Despite its size, Reine draws thousands of visitors each year.

For most of its history, Reine has been a working village. It served as a trading post in the 1700s, and fishing has always been the backbone of daily life. Even during World War II, when parts of the village were burned by German forces, locals rebuilt and carried on. Today, people come for all kinds of experiences. Some climb Reinebringen for its sweeping views; others wander the shoreline or try a plate of fish that was probably caught that morning. Staying in a restored cabin offers a glimpse of what life here looked like before tourism arrived. What makes Reine memorable isn't a list of 'must-do' activities; it's the history, tradition, and sense of community that settle in the moment you arrive.

Europe's wild side

European Day of Parks

Today, European Day of Parks celebrates the national parks and conservation areas that shape a country's natural identity. Created by the EUROPARC Federation in 1999, this day commemorates the founding of Europe's first national parks—a set of nine parks established in Sweden in 1909. It promotes efforts to protect natural habitats, wildlife, and cultural heritage while encouraging sustainable tourism and outdoor activities.

Jotunheimen National Park in Norway is a prime example of protected natural landscapes. Established in 1980, it covers over 400 square miles of mountains, glaciers, and deep valleys. It is home to the country's highest peaks, including Galdhøpiggen, the highest in Northern Europe at 8,100 feet. The name 'Jotunheimen' translates to 'Home of the Giants,' a nod to its dramatic terrain and Norse mythology. The park shelters red foxes, Arctic foxes, lemmings, and red deer, while its flora includes hardy alpine species adapted to extreme conditions. The Gjende lake is famous for its striking green color, caused by glacial sediments. Stretching about 11 miles in length and less than a mile at its widest point, the lake sits at around 3,280 feet above sea level. It's the launch point for the famous Besseggen hike—which attracts thousands each year—made famous by Henrik Ibsen's play 'Peer Gynt.'

Stuck in a blue moment

Blue hour in Trondheim, Norway

In Norway, winter isn't just a season—it's an experience. In the north of the country, nights stretch for 20 hours, and there are entire weeks when the sun remains hidden below the horizon. It might sound bleak, but it's a unique time of the year. Why? Because around early afternoon, usually between 1 and 2 PM, a soft, lingering light reflects off the snow-covered ground and the deep blue sea. This forms a breathtaking, glassy blue glow that settles over the landscape. Each day, the blue hour arrives just a little later, a gentle reminder that the sun is slowly preparing to reclaim the sky.

Featured here is Trondheim's blue hour. The city lies on the southern shore of the Trondheimsfjord and is framed by the gentle curves of the Nidelva River. Founded in 997 CE as a trading post, Trondheim was Norway's capital during the Viking Age and remained so until 1217. While its coastal climate keeps winters relatively mild, Trondheim's nearby hills offer a colder, snowier microclimate perfect for winter sports enthusiasts.

A shore to adore

Traditional red fishermen's cabins, Reine, Norway

Step aside, regular beach houses—Reine's little red cabins are here to steal the show. One of the prettiest places in the Lofoten Islands of Norway, Reine is a fishing village with a population of around 300. A trading post since 1775, it has evolved from a commercial hub to become a sought-after tourist destination. The village's waterfront is lined with the traditional cabins called rorbu or rorbuer that are seen in today's image. Once occupied by fishermen, these cabins are now popular tourist rentals. In 1999, German painter Ingo Kühl set up a pop-up studio in a rorbu in Reine, where he painted scenes of the harbor framed by the towering mountain range. This village truly shines in winter, when you can see the northern lights twinkling in the night sky.

Svolvaer, Lofoten Islands, Norway

Norway's Lofoten Islands are a crossroads of traditional life and modern industry in the Arctic Circle. Svolvaer, where our homepage image was taken, was historically an important fishing village that was granted town status in 1918. People have lived in this area for more than 1,000 years and it still serves as a sanctuary for travelers looking for a peaceful getaway, welcoming up to 200,000 visitors a year. The traditional rorbu houses, built on poles over water, bring their own distinctive charm to the town. These cabins were once made for traveling fishermen and have now been refurbished to meet contemporary tastes.

Shades of autumn

Birch trees, Drammen, Norway

Surrounded by forests and embraced by fjords, the Norwegian port city of Drammen is a haven for outdoor enthusiasts. Birch trees flourish at high altitudes, making them a natural fit for the mountainous region. When autumn arrives, their leaves transform into a mosaic of gold and crimson, in stark contrast to their pale, slender trunks. Long associated with new beginnings and renewal, birch trees don't just look good, they provide a home and sustenance for wildlife, and can be used for firewood and in construction.

Mount Segla, Senja Island, Norway

A beautiful island popularly known as 'Norway in miniature,' Senja's diverse landscape boasts mountainous terrain as well as lush greenery. At 600 square miles, it is Norway's second-largest island, connected to the mainland by the Gisund Bridge. The most notable spot on Senja is pictured today, Mount Segla, a magnificent peak that is visited frequently in summer, with a trail starting in Fjordgård, a fishing village in the north of Senja. It's a tough hike to the top, more than 2,000 feet above sea level. Other tourist attractions include Ånderdalen National Park and Tranøya, an island off the south coast of Senja known for its tranquility.

Storseisundet Bridge, Norway

Norway's picturesque Atlantic Ocean Road crosses eight bridges as it makes its way across islands, islets, and reefs to link the island of Averøya with the Romsdal Peninsula on the mainland. The longest of them, pictured here, is the Storseisundet Bridge. This bridge, surrounded by ample natural beauty, was tough to build. It took six years, and during construction workers were pelted by the region's unpredictable weather, including 12 hurricanes. It opened in 1989 and remains a popular visitor attraction. With its dramatic curve and sudden incline, Storseisundet Bridge creates the illusion of suddenly disappearing into the ocean, making drivers skip a heartbeat. Its construction showcases the brilliance of Norwegian engineering, blending seamlessly with the landscape.

Henningsvær Stadion, Norway

If you want to take in a soccer game and the grandiose beauty of the Norwegian Sea at the same time, this place is pitch perfect. Squeezed into a small Norwegian fishing village, it's fair to say that Henningsvær Stadion's grounds will probably never host a UEFA Champions League. But, while it lacks stands for spectators, there's still plenty of atmosphere to soak up in this striking location. Those who play here do so surrounded by the sound of waves, seabirds, and the smells of salt air and cod, drying on the racks surrounding the pitch.

Cod fishing is central to the economy here in Henningsvær, in the Lofoten Islands–but partly due to drone photography, this scenic pitch has become an important tourist attraction. Resting on a rugged island, surrounded by bare rocks and deep blue waters, watching a game here can make for a surreal and unforgettable experience.
