A Greek escape

Vai, Crete, Greece

On the remote northeastern tip of the island of Crete in Greece lies Vai—a quiet corner far from the usual tourist trail. At the heart of this region is its beach, a broad curve of golden sand kissed by the calm, shallow waters of the Aegean. With sunbeds, umbrellas, and showers, it's an ideal spot for swimming, relaxing, or simply soaking in the peaceful atmosphere. But what truly sets Vai apart lies just behind the sand: Europe's largest natural palm grove. It is made up of over 5,000 Cretan date palm trees, a species unique to Crete and parts of Türkiye.

In the early 1970s, Vai was 'rediscovered' by hippies, who made it their haven after being moved out of the village of Matala. By the 1980s, however, increasing numbers of visitors and a lack of infrastructure had left the area littered and degraded. Recognizing its ecological and cultural value, authorities declared Vai a protected zone. Cleanup efforts restored the area, and today, Vai is one of Crete's most beautiful and unspoiled natural treasures. It's a reminder of how careful stewardship can bring a place back to life.

From quiet nights to adventurous days

Corfu at night, Greece

The island of Corfu, Greece, meets you at night with a quiet kind of intensity: stone facades catching warm lamplight, fortress walls rising in sharp outline, and narrow lanes unfolding like a lived-in labyrinth. The Old Town doesn't just look historic—it feels inhabited, shaped by centuries of shifting cultures and the slow rhythm of island life after dark.

Move beyond the historic center and Corfu shifts into a more dynamic landscape. Rugged rock formations edge the coastline, carved by wind and sea into dramatic shapes that catch the morning light. Forested hills roll toward turquoise bays and secluded coves, where the colors deepen and brighten throughout the day. In the interior, warm springs and mineral-rich waters offer a serene pause, tucked into pockets of green that feel removed from the bustle of the harbor.

Returning to Corfu's Old Town, the UNESCO-listed streets blend Venetian, French, and British influences into a uniquely Greek character—stone arcades, fortress walls, pastel buildings, and lively squares where cafés spill into narrow lanes. Together, Corfu's dramatic coastlines, natural springs, and storied Old Town create an island experience that transitions beautifully from quiet evenings to vivid, adventurous days.

National Take the Stairs Day

National Take the Stairs Day, observed on the second Wednesday of January, encourages everyone to add small bursts of movement to daily life. Choosing stairs instead of elevators, or fitting in a short walk or bike ride, helps build healthier habits. With millions living with chronic lung disease and air quality concerns growing, simple actions that strengthen our bodies matter more than ever.

If you want to mark the day with a climb to remember, the Fortress of Palamidi has you covered. Rising 709 feet above the city of Nafplio in Greece, this Venetian-built stronghold dates back to 1714. This impressive fortification has eight bastions, each designed as an independent unit so that if one fell, the others could still be defended. The Ottomans captured the fortress a year after completion, and Greece reclaimed it in 1822, renaming the bastions after heroes like Achilles and Leonidas. Today, visitors often test themselves on the fortress's famous staircase—once believed to have 999 steps, though the actual count is 857. At the top, sweeping views of the Argolic Gulf make every step worthwhile.

Dreams painted in blue and white

Village of Oia in Santorini, Greece

Ever wondered what it's like to live on a movie set? Oia is about as close as it gets, part of Greece's Santorini archipelago. This village has appeared in films like 'The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants' and 'Tomb Raider,' thanks to its Cycladic houses—cube-shaped homes with flat roofs—and cliffside views that feel almost unreal. Its unique architecture has roots in the late 19th century. Sailors and merchants carved houses right into the volcanic cliffs—cool in summer and warm in winter. The white-and-blue theme is also more than just for show: houses were painted with lime wash so rainwater would run off and be collected. Today, visitors wander its cobbled lanes, explore the Naval Maritime Museum, or climb to the ruins of Agios Nikolaos Castle for unforgettable sunsets.

Nicknamed the 'Eagle's Nest,' Oia overlooks the volcanic islets of Palia and Nea Kameni, as well as Therasia, which was physically connected to Santorini before the Minoan eruption. And Santorini itself? Think of it as a crown of rock around the sea, a half-sunken caldera shaped by the eruption of 1600 BCE, one of the largest volcanic eruptions in human history.

Naxos in the Cyclades Islands of Greece

As daylight fades or just before it emerges, the island of Naxos in Greece takes on an azure glow, immersing itself in the magic of the blue hour. When the sun is positioned well below the horizon, during this brief window, the lingering sunlight casts a deep blue hue across the sky.

Naxos is renowned for its deposits of emery, a corundum-rich rock that was once among the finest natural abrasives used before modern alternatives emerged. The most fertile island in the Cyclades, it has a reliable water supply in the region. It is celebrated across Greece for its signature flavors, including the rich Arseniko Naxou cheese, flavorful potatoes, aromatic Kitron liqueur made from local citrus, and Naxian honey, primarily sourced from thyme nectar. A sun-soaked island, Naxos is packed with beaches, villages, and ancient ruins. Whether you're looking to rest on the sands of beaches like Agia Anna, Agios Prokopios, or Plaka, or chase the wind at one of the island's top windsurfing and kitesurfing spots, there's no shortage of adventure here.

A standing ovation for theaters

World Theater Day

Lights on, curtains rise—it's World Theater Day. Since 1961, this annual event by the International Theater Institute (ITI) has united audiences and artists in a shared appreciation of storytelling, creativity, and culture. Every year, a renowned theater figure is invited by ITI to deliver a message that resonates across the industry. Their words are translated into more than 50 languages and shared with people all over the world. These messages highlight theater's role in society—be it as a mirror to reality, an agent of change, or a refuge for the imagination. From Shakespeare's soliloquies to experimental avant-garde productions, theater has continuously evolved while holding onto its core: human connection.

So, what better place to celebrate today than at the Odeon of Herodes Atticus? Located at the foot of the Acropolis in Athens, Greece, this stone Roman theater has been setting the scene for performances for nearly two millennia. Built in 161 CE by the wealthy Roman Herodes Atticus in memory of his wife, the ancient venue has hosted everything from classical tragedies to modern-day concerts. Despite the passing centuries, its acoustics still strike the right chord.

Echoes of history

Methoni Castle, Messenia, Greece

Perched on a rocky headland is Methoni Castle, a symbol of medieval might on the shores of the Ionian Sea. The fortress, on the Peloponnese peninsula in southern Greece, was built by the Venetians in the early 13th century as a trading post and defensive bastion, protecting the coastline from invaders. Its Bourtzi tower, an extension of the fortress standing on a small islet, was once connected to the main castle by a stone bridge.

Many conquerors, from the Ottomans in 1500 to the French in 1828, aimed to win Methoni's strategic position. Some original structures, like the castle itself, still stand, allowing visitors to walk through the same gates where soldiers once marched. The village's blend of architecture, with Byzantine, Venetian, and Ottoman influences, narrates a storied past where European powers battled for dominance.

On top of the world

The Monastery of Roussanou, Greece

Welcome to the Roussanou Monastery, nestled amidst the towering cliffs of the Meteora rock formation in Thessaly, northern Greece. Roussanou is one of the six monasteries that remain active in this UNESCO World Heritage Site. Despite the construction difficulties, 24 monasteries were founded on these 'columns of the sky' in the 14th and 15th centuries.

Once you've conquered the climb, you'll be greeted by stunning panoramic views, but the real treasures lie within the monastery itself—a world of Byzantine art and architecture. This style emerged in the Eastern Roman Empire, which lasted from the 4th century CE until the fall of Constantinople in 1453. Are you ready to take the climb?

Folegandros Island, Cyclades, Greece

Welcome to Folegandros, one of the Greek Cyclades Islands in the Aegean Sea. This picturesque island has changed hands several times during its long history. It is thought it was once home to the Dorians, one of the four major ethnic groups of classical Greece, but it was also ruled for centuries by the Republic of Venice and later the Ottoman Empire. Greece reclaimed it in 1828.

Chora, the island's modern capital, can be seen on our homepage, perched on the edge of a 656-foot cliff with sweeping views of the ocean and surrounding islands. Built by the Venetians in 1212, the town is now a popular tourist destination, with its charming squares and traditional whitewashed churches.

Step up to the challenge!

Take the Stairs Day

It's time to step up! Today is Take the Stairs Day, an initiative by the American Lung Association aimed at encouraging us to make small changes that can have a big impact on our well-being.

To mark the day, we're admiring the snake-like steps to Mylopotamos Beach on the mountainous Pelion peninsula, in northern Greece. The sinuous path to this secluded beach winds beneath the cool shade of pine trees. Enough steps for today? Don't worry, there's a beach bar along the way.
