National Trails Day
If your screen time has been winning lately, today is a good time to change that—we suggest hiking. National Trails Day, created in 1993 by the American Hiking Society, nudges people toward exploring trails.
Take the Natchez Trace Parkway near Tupelo, Mississippi, featured in today's image. This trail was used by Native Americans for centuries before serving European and American explorers and traders in the late 18th and early 19th centuries. Now it covers 444 miles, with preserved sections showing how the original path sank below the surrounding land after years of use. Markers along the route explain these layers of history, alongside stretches of forest and open land that make it easy to slow down.
Time on trails can help lower stress, improve mood, and ease stiffness from long hours of sitting. Because it falls on a weekend, it's an easy win—step out, move a little, and let the trail do the rest.

The quiet power of an unclaimed world
World Environment Day
If nature had a 'do not disturb' sign, it would hang over Sarek National Park, often called 'the last European wilderness.' On World Environment Day, this remote corner of Swedish Lapland reminds us what the planet looks like when humans take a step back—and let the wild take the lead.
Established in 1909, Sarek is one of the continent's oldest national parks and remains untouched by modern infrastructure. There are no marked trails, no cozy cafés, and definitely no shortcuts. Instead, it offers over 200 peaks, nearly 100 glaciers, and valleys shaped by ice and time. It is part of the Laponian Area, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and home to the Indigenous Sámi people, whose reindeer herding traditions still thrive across these lands.
Wildlife here plays it cool—moose, lynx, and wolverines keep things low-key. Even the rivers refuse to stay still, carving their own paths through the landscape. Today is about action, but Sarek makes a strong case for inaction too. Sometimes, protecting the planet means resisting the urge to tame it.

Where the road stops, the ride begins
World Bicycle Day
Your average route to work might not resemble the one in today's image, but it shouldn't stop you from pedaling. World Bicycle Day invites us to rethink what's possible on two wheels—whether the ride cuts through city streets or remote terrain. Observed every June 3, the United Nations–backed day recognizes cycling as a practical way to move, supporting health, lowering emissions, and making mobility more accessible.
An adventurer shown here cycles through Bardenas Reales Natural Park and Biosphere Reserve in Navarra, Spain, a stark landscape shaped by wind and water over millions of years. Its maze of eroded cliffs, plateaus, and dry channels feels closer to another planet than northern Spain. Protected as a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve, the park allows cycling on designated routes, offering a rare chance to experience a fragile environment at ground level and human speed.
From daily commutes to places like this, bicycles turn travel into exploration—quiet, efficient, and surprisingly bold.

Between the blues
Highway through Xitai Jinaier Lake, Qinghai Province, China
Cutting a surreal path through the high-altitude deserts of western China, Xitai Jinaier Lake (also known as West Taijinar Lake) is a striking salt lake in the remote Qaidam Basin. A stretch of National Highway 315 runs directly across its shallow waters, creating the illusion of a road floating between two worlds. On one side, the water often appears deep blue; on the other, a softer green hue, a contrast shaped by differing mineral concentrations in the brine.
Set more than 8,800 feet above sea level, the lake lies within a vast, arid basin where salt lakes and desert expanses dominate the landscape. Here, evaporation leaves behind mineral-rich deposits, giving the water its unusual tones. The result is a stark yet captivating environment—quiet, expansive, and almost otherworldly. Driving across Xitai Jinaier Lake feels like crossing an inland sea at the edge of the world, where geology and isolation combine to create one of China's most unforgettable landscapes.

Flavors of history

Follow the flow
End of American Wetlands Month
Today is the last day of American Wetlands Month, but don't let that bog you down. Take today to shine a spotlight on wetlands. Held throughout May, this national observance shines a spotlight on wetlands—some of the most productive ecosystems in the United States—and few places show their power quite like Everglades National Park. From above, Florida's iconic wetlands unfold as a vast patchwork of shallow water, sawgrass, mangroves, and winding channels, shaped by freshwater slowly flowing south from Lake Okeechobee.
Covering about 1.5 million acres, the Everglades is the largest subtropical wilderness in the country and a vital refuge for birds, fish, reptiles, and rare species such as the Florida panther. Wetlands also work behind the scenes, filtering pollutants, storing carbon, reducing floods, and helping supply clean water to nearby communities.
American Wetlands Month invites us to appreciate these watery landscapes—from above and on the ground—and recognize why protecting them matters long after May ends.

A 'peak' into history
1953 Mount Everest Expedition
In Sagarmatha National Park, Nepal, Mount Everest rises into view, calm and unmoved as evening settles in. But on May 29, 1953, that stillness was broken. After years of planning and weeks of climbing, New Zealander Edmund Hillary and Sherpa mountaineer Tenzing Norgay reached the summit. At over 29,000 feet above sea level, they became the first people known to have stood at Earth's highest point.
That moment became part of a much older story. Long before modern expeditions arrived, local communities honored the mountain as sacred. They lived in its shadow, reading its moods with knowledge refined over generations. Such understanding proved essential in a place shaped by thin air, sudden storms, and unforgiving routes.
The 1953 ascent showed what cooperation could unlock: British logistics, Sherpa expertise, and a broad support team came together on one ridge. As daylight fades across Everest, the glow along its peak recalls a spring day when curiosity and courage lifted humans to the very edge of the sky.

Design meets discipline
Old city wall of Hwaseong Fortress, Suwon, South Korea
As night settles over Suwon, South Korea, the old city wall pictured here shows that function doesn't necessarily cancel out beauty—it can create it. Built between 1794 and 1796 under King Jeongjo of the Joseon Dynasty, Hwaseong Fortress was more than a barrier. It was policy in stone: a reform minded push for a leaner, better-run state, driven by practicality and a deeply personal motive. Jeongjo ordered its construction to honor his father while strengthening a kingdom that wanted smarter systems, not just thicker walls.
Ahead of its time, this masterpiece of Korean fortification hid innovation in plain sight. Rather than wrestling with the landscape, the roughly 3.5-mile wall follows its curves. Bastions widened defensive coverage, watchtowers doubled as signaling points, concealed gates allowed discreet movement, and pulley systems quickened construction. Recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1997, the site is remarkably intact—and still very much in motion. Hwaseong remains walkable, watchable, and woven into daily life. Defense by day, poetry by night.

A season written in lupine
Lupine flowers in bloom, Northern California
As spring sweeps across Northern California, the landscape is transformed by the vibrant displays of lupine flowers in shades of blue, purple, and white. Flourishing in the region's Mediterranean climate, these wildflowers provide a vital source of nectar for pollinators such as bees, butterflies, and beetles. With over 200 species found worldwide, lupines range from coastal varieties to those that thrive in mountain meadows. Beyond their striking beauty, lupines are essential to the ecosystem: by fixing nitrogen underground, they enrich soil fertility and support the growth of surrounding plants, even in nutrient-poor environments.
In some cultures, specially prepared lupine seeds are enjoyed as a snack. However, caution is necessary—untreated seeds are extremely bitter and potentially toxic. By late spring, the vibrant blooms give way to seed pods, continuing the cycle of life for another year. Witnessing this seasonal transformation offers a quiet reminder of how color and life return to the land each year.

A breeze in stone
