An ocean's frozen cathedral
Arched iceberg, western Antarctic Peninsula, Southern Ocean
A sculpted arch of ice rises from the Southern Ocean along the Antarctic Peninsula, one of the fastest-warming regions on Earth. This formation began as compacted snow that turned into glacial ice over thousands of years. Eventually, part of a glacier or floating ice shelf fractured and broke free—a process known as calving—creating a drifting iceberg.
Icebergs are classified by size and shape. To qualify, a mass must tower more than about 16 feet above sea level, yet nearly 90% of it remains hidden below the surface. Flat-topped 'tabular' forms are common in Antarctica, while eroded features like this arch fall into irregular, non-tabular categories.
Though seemingly barren, these floating giants support life. Algae cling to their undersides, feeding swarms of krill, which sustain fish, seals, and whales. As ice melts, it releases nutrients that fertilize surrounding waters, turning these frozen sculptures into mobile ecosystems.

A rock-solid marvel
Aerial view of the ruins of Sacsayhuamán, Cusco, Peru
Set high above Cusco in Peru, Sacsayhuamán reveals the ambition of the Inca Empire in stone. Built in the 15th century, this vast complex once formed part of the sacred capital of the Incas. From above, the layout becomes clear: terraces, open plazas, and the remains of towers forming a carefully planned citadel. The largest walls, built from enormous blocks, still stand strong today. Some stones rise more than 27 feet tall and were fitted together so precisely—without mortar—that the structure has endured centuries of earthquakes.
Archaeologists believe Sacsayhuamán served both ceremonial and strategic purposes, hosting gatherings and rituals dedicated to Inti, the Inca sun god, while also overlooking the city below. Its name comes from Quechua, often translated as 'Satisfied Falcon,' reflecting the importance of birds of prey in Andean belief. Today, the site remains a powerful reminder of Inca engineering—where design, symbolism, and sheer scale continue to impress from every angle.

Tremola Road on the Saint Gotthard Pass in Airolo, Switzerland
Follow the glowing ribbon of switchbacks and you'll find one of Switzerland's most legendary drives: Tremola Road, the historic southern approach to the Saint Gotthard Pass, above Airolo. Built in the early 1800s and largely shaped by a 1951 reconstruction, this route is celebrated as Switzerland's longest monument to historic road construction. Its showstopper stretch climbs about 980 feet in just 2.5 miles, curling through 24 named hairpin bends on granite cobblestones, with sturdy retaining walls edging the way. Overall, it runs about 7 miles and features 37 bends in total. Take it slow—every curve feels like a step back in time, trading speed for sweeping mountain scenery and big views toward the upper Leventina Valley. Whether you're driving, cycling, or pulling over for photos, look for the Grand Tour of Switzerland photo spot framing those iconic zigzags.
Adventure tip: Aim for clear, dry conditions—the cobbles are part of the thrill.

Aged to scenic perfection
Great Smoky Mountains National Park turns 92!
These mountains were shaped over time—and June 15, 1934, helped protect them. That's when the Great Smoky Mountains National Park was established in Tennessee and North Carolina. Covering over 522,000 acres, the park takes its name from the natural smoky haze drifting over its ridgelines. Part of the Appalachian Mountains, these peaks are over 300 million years old.
Native Americans have hunted in these mountains for around 14,000 years. Archaeologists have found Archaic-period projectile points along animal migration routes, while Woodland-period sites reveal 2,000-year-old ceramics and early farming practices.
Recognized as the Salamander Capital of the World, the park is a biodiversity hotspot, home to around 30 salamander species, black bears, elk, over 200 bird species, and thousands of plant varieties. Its forests shift with elevation, supporting a wide range of ecosystems. Kuwohi is the highest point, offering sweeping views. Meanwhile, Cades Cove and Cataloochee Valley contain preserved buildings that reflect life in the region before the park's creation.

Layers of change
Sunset in Badlands National Park, South Dakota
Layered ridges stretch across Badlands National Park in South Dakota. Their bands of pink, gray, and gold shift with the light as eroded peaks and valleys come into view. Wind and water continue to shape this terrain, steadily wearing away soft sedimentary rock and exposing millions of years of Earth's history in layers formed by ancient rivers, volcanic ash, and periods when shallow seas covered the region.
Beneath this rugged surface lies one of the world's richest fossil beds, preserving the remains of early mammals such as ancient horses and relatives of modern rhinoceroses that once roamed the region. The Badlands are only a window into the past. Today, bison graze the open prairie, bighorn sheep move along steep ridges, and prairie dogs gather in active colonies across the grasslands.
Scenic roads and overlooks trace the contours of the land, offering sweeping views. Even now, layers of the past continue to emerge as the landscape slowly transforms.

Quiet strength
Limpets at low tide on the coast of Praia da Ursa, Portugal
Tucked away beneath steep cliffs near Cabo da Roca, the westernmost point of mainland Europe, Praia da Ursa feels like the edge of the continent. Reached by a narrow, rugged trail, this secluded beach along Portugal's Atlantic coast is shaped largely by wind, stone, and powerful waves. When the tide recedes, the shoreline briefly widens. Smooth rocks emerge, and with them, small signs of life. Limpets cling tightly to the exposed stone, holding fast where the ocean usually breaks.
These modest marine snails are well adapted to conditions here, using strong suction and low shells to withstand surf, shifting temperatures, and long periods exposed to air. During high tide or when submerged, they graze on algae, then return to familiar spots as the sea recedes. Praia da Ursa's isolation makes these moments easy to miss and rewarding to notice. In a landscape defined by scale and force, even the smallest survivors reflect the Atlantic coast's quiet resilience.

A splash of blue
Hnausapollur crater lake, Fjallabak Nature Reserve, Iceland
From above, the lake's smooth surface contrasts sharply with the rugged ground surrounding it. Hnausapollur crater lake—also known as Bláhylur—lies in the heart of Fjallabak Nature Reserve, a remote area of Iceland's highlands shaped more by volcanic activity than by human settlement. The crater formed when magma met groundwater, triggering an explosion that carved out the circular basin visible today.
Over time, rain, meltwater, and groundwater accumulated within the basin, forming the striking lake seen in today's image. Its color shifts with light and weather, often glowing turquoise under clear skies and appearing deeper blue or gray when clouds pass overhead. The surrounding slopes reveal distinct layers of volcanic material, recording successive eruptions that once spread across the landscape.
Fjallabak remains largely undeveloped, protected for its geology and vast open spaces. From this aerial perspective, it's easy to see how powerful natural forces shaped Hnausapollur and why Iceland's highlands continue to captivate visitors—a place where the Earth's restless energy remains visible at the surface.

Vernazza, Cinque Terre, Liguria, Italy
Vernazza is a small seaside town in Cinque Terre, in Italy's Liguria region. Built around the area's only natural harbor, it has long been tied to the sea. First recorded in 1080 as a fortified settlement and maritime base, it later became part of the Republic of Genoa's coastal defenses. To this day, the village preserves its past in the ruins of Doria Castle and the watchtowers overlooking the bay. At the water's edge stands the Church of Santa Margherita d'Antiochia, first mentioned in 1318 and expanded in later centuries, with a bell tower overlooking the port. Above the houses and narrow lanes, steep terraces support vineyards and olive groves, shaped by generations of stonework in a landscape protected within Cinque Terre National Park, part of a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Picture an aperitivo here: a glass of local white wine, the harbor in view, and Ligurian favorites like focaccia and basil pesto—basically a postcard you can taste.

Drift with the current
World Oceans Day
Today is World Oceans Day, so follow the lead of a creature that goes wherever the water takes it. Want to spot a lion's mane jellyfish? Look in cold northern seas. Its bell is split into eight lobes, and beneath it hang long tentacles and oral arms. As it drifts with the current, stinging cells snare plankton and small fish. For humans, the sting can be painful. Reactions vary, and even a washed-up tentacle can still hurt. The rule is simple: admire it, then leave it alone. Some lion's manes in Arctic waters have bells more than 6 feet across, but most sightings are smaller animals near shore after storms or strong currents.
World Oceans Day is not a lecture. It is a reminder that ocean health is a chain, from plankton to predators. Cut single-use plastic, back cleaner shipping and fishing rules, and support habitat protection where you live. Keep the ocean working, and the wild stays with it.

The last wall standing
