The power of protest
Earth Day
Earth Day didn't knock gently. It kicked the door wide open. In 1970, oil‑soaked beaches, burning rivers, and toxic air mobilized millions into street protests. When looking away was no longer an option, conservation was forced onto political agendas, sparking landmark environmental laws and flipping planet‑care from fringe concern to global priority. Every April 22, over 190 countries pause, reflect, and reassess.
The 2026 theme, 'Our Power, Our Planet,' sets an ambitious target: triple renewable energy capacity worldwide by 2030. But action isn't only about turbines and solar panels. It's also protecting the natural engines already doing heavy lifting. Take Alam‑Pedja Nature Reserve in Estonia, captured here. Since 1994, it has safeguarded one of Europe's largest wetland systems. How? By letting it be. Rivers run freely, bogs store carbon, and floodplains soak excess water without concrete barriers. Elk, lynx, and black storks thrive as seasons redraw the map. Alam‑Pedja teaches that restraint can be the boldest move—to step back and let nature lead the way.

The adventure doesn't end at sundown
National Park Week
National Park Week is your cue to trade routine for trail dust. It's a nine-day celebration running April 18–26, highlighting more than 400 places across the National Park System that preserve natural and cultural heritage while creating unforgettable outdoor experiences. From coastlines and forests to vast desert landscapes, these protected sites invite exploration, reflection, and wonder.
In southeastern Utah, Canyonlands National Park near Moab offers a striking reminder that the adventure doesn't end at sundown. As the last light fades, the Colorado and Green rivers trace their way through carved canyons, towering buttes, and rugged spires. With its remote setting and minimal light pollution, the park's clear skies reveal a brilliant canopy of stars.
Designated an International Dark Sky Park, Canyonlands is one of the best places to experience the desert after dark. Stargazing here doesn't require heading deep into the backcountry—short walks and scenic pullouts provide unforgettable nighttime views, especially on moonless nights when the Milky Way stretches across the sky.

The tide's passing signature

The silence of unfinished giants
World Heritage Day
Today, on World Heritage Day, attention turns to places that tell humanity's shared story—protected for their exceptional cultural or natural value. One of them rises from volcanic stone on Easter Island, Chile. At Rano Raraku, the slopes of an extinct volcano became the workshop where nearly all of the island's famous moai were carved. The image captures this remarkable quarry, where half-finished figures emerge from the rock, frozen mid-creation.
Carved by the Rapa Nui people between about the 13th and 16th centuries, the statues were shaped directly from compressed volcanic ash, then transported across the island to ceremonial platforms. Rano Raraku lies within Rapa Nui National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site recognized for its extraordinary archaeological landscape and living Polynesian heritage.
World Heritage Day highlights why protecting such places matters. Sites like Rano Raraku are more than landmarks—they are records of human ingenuity, belief, and connection to the land, preserved for future generations to study and experience.

Petal parade
Skagit Valley Tulip Festival
Each spring, Washington's Skagit Valley transforms into a patchwork of color as the Skagit Valley Tulip Festival celebrates the arrival of bloom season. Throughout April, visitors can explore tulip gardens and farmland lined with vibrant rows of flowers, all framed by mountain views.
The festival isn't limited to one location—it stretches across the valley, inviting guests to discover multiple gardens, each offering its own experience. Some focus on carefully designed displays, while others highlight working farms and wide- open fields. Alongside the flowers, the festival connects visitors with art exhibits, family-friendly activities, and community events hosted throughout the region.
Bloom timing changes every year, making each visit a little different, so checking bloom updates is part of the adventure. What began as a small local celebration in 1984 has grown into one of the Pacific Northwest's most loved spring traditions, drawing photographers, nature lovers, and road trip enthusiasts eager to welcome the season.

After the lights go down
International Dark Sky Week
When the lights go down, the universe puts on a show. International Dark Sky Week, celebrated each April, invites everyone to rediscover the night and learn why darkness is worth protecting. Launched in 2003, the week highlights how excessive artificial light affects wildlife, human health, energy use, and our ability to see the stars. Fewer lights don't mean less safety—smart, well-designed lighting can do both.
The image of the Milky Way glowing above Anza-Borrego Desert State Park captures this idea perfectly. As California's largest state park and an officially designated International Dark-Sky Park, Anza-Borrego offers some of the best stargazing in the country. On a clear night, the sky fills with planets, star clusters, and the bright band of our home galaxy—views that have vanished from many urban areas.
International Dark Sky Week encourages simple actions, from shielding porch lights to joining a local star party. Look up, get curious, and help keep nights naturally brilliant.

The first step off Earth
International Day of Human Space Flight
Today, the world marks the International Day of Human Space Flight, a United Nations observance honoring the first human journey into space and the start of the space age for humanity. The date recalls April 12, 1961, when Yuri Gagarin orbited Earth, proving that people could leave the planet and return safely.
That spirit of exploration lives on aboard the International Space Station. From the ISS, astronauts photograph glowing city grids and powerful lightning storms streaking through Earth's atmosphere—views that turn science into magic. Orbiting about 250 miles above the planet, the station circles Earth every 90 minutes, giving crews up to 16 sunrises and sunsets a day. It has been continuously occupied since 2000 and is operated by a partnership of the United States, Russia, Europe, Japan, and Canada. Inside, astronauts conduct research that advances medicine, materials, and climate science, while also learning how humans can live and work farther from home.

Volcanic veneer
Papagayo Beach, Lanzarote, Canary Islands, Spain
A beach born from fire rarely does so subtly, yet Papagayo Beach manages exactly that. The shoreline we see today rests on the southern edge of Lanzarote, one of Spain's Canary Islands. Tropical fantasy? More like volcanic precision. Millions of years ago, this land rose in successive layers of basalt and ash thrust upward by submarine eruptions.
About 400 feet long, the cove feels intimate. Nestled within Los Ajaches Natural Monument, it remains protected and deliberately low-key. Once, it sheltered sailors navigating between Africa and Europe. Today, it is reached by foot, boat, or a famously bumpy dirt road—preservation by inconvenience. Cliffs arc around the bay, forming natural breakwaters that temper the Atlantic into calm, clear shallows. Fish flicker through the light, crabs patrol the tidal edges, and octopuses vanish into stone. The sand's warm, golden tone? Pulverized shells mixed with volcanic rock, refined by millennia of tides. Papagayo's power lies in its contrasts: forged by eruption, shaped by erosion, and preserved by restraint.

Veil of light
Sgwd yr Eira waterfall, Brecon Beacons National Park, Wales
Water spills in clean lines at Sgwd yr Eira, one of South Wales' most distinctive waterfalls. Its Welsh name means 'Waterfall of Snow,' referring to the pale curtain of water sliding over the rock face. What sets this waterfall apart is access. A narrow path leads visitors behind the falling water, immersing them in sound, light, and movement at close range. Sgwd yr Eira lies within Brecon Beacons National Park, often called 'Waterfall Country' for its network of rivers and falls carved into wooded gorges. Well-marked trails connect this waterfall to others along the River Hepste, making it a popular stop on longer hikes. Above the valleys, the landscape opens into rolling moorland and long ridgelines where upland paths are shaped by wind and changing weather. These contrasts define the Brecon Beacons, where open, exposed uplands give way to sheltered water, tying the landscape together.

Seattle, Washington
Seattle's waterfront seems suspended between sea and sky as soft light settles on the horizon. The city is named after Chief Si'ahl, a leader of the Duwamish and Suquamish peoples, whose legacy remains important to the region's identity. Steep streets lead down to piers that sweep across Elliott Bay. Rising above the shoreline, the Space Needle stands out as the city's most recognizable landmark. Pike Place Market, founded in 1907, overlooks the waterfront and continues to anchor daily life and long-held traditions.
Music adds another layer to the city's story. In the late 20th century, grunge emerged from small clubs, and its raw sound evolved into a global genre that continues to influence Seattle's creative pulse. Framed by water and distant mountain ranges, the city feels open and expansive. Its evergreen landscape earned Seattle the enduring nickname 'Emerald City.'
