Preserving Europe's wild places

European Day of Parks

The European Day of Parks celebrates protected areas across the continent, marking the creation of Europe's first national parks in 1909. It serves as a reminder that many of today's most iconic landscapes exist because of long-term conservation efforts. Today's image highlights a prime example of this legacy: Tre Cime Nature Park in northern Italy.

Located in the Dolomites—a UNESCO World Heritage Site known for striking geology—the park was established in 1981. It is best known for the Tre Cime di Lavaredo: three towering dolomite peaks that rise sharply above alpine meadows. Their sheer rock faces make them among the Alps' most recognizable landmarks.

Created to protect fragile alpine ecosystems, Tre Cime Nature Park balances preservation with carefully managed access. Well-maintained trails guide visitors through the landscape, and limits on development help safeguard native wildlife and the area's rugged character. European Day of Parks reminds us that these places endure because conservation remains a priority.

The shape of life at sea

International Day for Biological Diversity

Observed each year on May 22, International Day for Biological Diversity is a global reminder that life on Earth is richer—and more fragile—than it appears. Established by the United Nations, today highlights why protecting plants, animals, and ecosystems matters for food, medicine, climate stability, and everyday well-being.

Few places reveal our planet's secrets with such clarity as Kauehi Atoll, seen here from above in the Tuamotu Archipelago of French Polynesia. Its thin coral ring encloses a vast turquoise lagoon, shaped over millennia by living reefs and sheltered currents. Kauehi's ecosystem is part of Fakarava Biosphere Reserve and supports coral communities, fish nurseries, seabirds, and island vegetation adapted to life between ocean and sky.

For centuries, Polynesian navigators understood this balance, relying on healthy lagoons and reefs for survival and culture—a relationship still reflected in the atoll today. On International Day for Biological Diversity, landscapes like Kauehi remind us that safeguarding nature protects stories, cultures, and futures across our shared planet.

Brewing a legacy

International Tea Day

International Tea Day celebrates a drink that connects daily rituals to ancient landscapes. Just one look at the terraced tea fields of Sichuan Province, China, shows how deep those roots run. This misty region in southwest China is one of the earliest centers of tea culture, where people drank and cultivated tea more than 2,000 years ago. On nearby Mengding Mountain, a scholar named Wu Lizhen planted some of the world's first managed tea gardens during the Han Dynasty, laying the groundwork for generations of growers.

The steep terraces weren't built for beauty alone. They helped farmers manage rainfall, protect fragile soil, and hand-pick tender leaves that later traveled far beyond Sichuan. For centuries, harvests from these hills moved along rugged trade routes toward Tibet, carried by porters across mountain passes.

Recognized by the United Nations, International Tea Day highlights the beverage's cultural legacy and the millions of livelihoods tied to every cup—whether brewed at home or grown on a mountainside.

The edge of Mallorca

Formentor Lighthouse, Mallorca, Balearic Islands, Spain

At Mallorca's far northern tip, in Spain's Balearic Islands, the Formentor Lighthouse stands on the sheer cliffs of Cap de Formentor. This exposed headland is often called the 'Meeting of the Winds.' Built in 1863 and first lit on September 30 of that year, the lighthouse rises nearly 700 feet above the Mediterranean Sea and is reached by a narrow, switchback road about 8 miles from Port de Pollença. Under your feet is pale limestone—rock formed from ancient marine life and later lifted and carved by erosion into dramatic faces, sea caves, and natural arches. This rugged geology gives rise to the area's stark beauty and sense of isolation. Want to earn the view? Follow one of the peninsula's hiking routes, or tackle the short, steep climb to Talaia d'Albercutx for a watchtower panorama before continuing to the lighthouse. Keep an eye on the slopes: wild goats, descended from early domestic herds, spring across the ledges with effortless balance.

Hope in the hall

International Museum Day

You walk into a museum, and suddenly time shifts. A fossil hints at life millions of years ago. A gemstone reflects geological change you can't see. That sense of connection is exactly what International Museum Day, created in 1977 by the International Council of Museums, aims to celebrate.

At the Natural History Museum in London, which opened in 1881, those moments come quickly. Built in Romanesque Revival style, the building reflects natural forms in its design, while four color-coded zones organize the galleries by theme. Today, it houses over 80 million specimens, spanning botany, zoology, mineralogy, and paleontology. The museum's dinosaur gallery and the massive blue whale skeleton , named Hope, suspended in Hintze Hall, are among its most recognized displays.

What draws people in—curiosity or nostalgia? Museums turn abstract ideas into real objects you can see and question. From science documentaries to films like 'Night at the Museum,' they remind us that exploration doesn't end in textbooks—it starts when you walk through the door.

Quiet peak, loud view

Hawksbill Mountain in Shenandoah National Park, Virginia

How high is high enough for a great view? In the eastern United States, it doesn't take much. Hawksbill Mountain is the highest point in Shenandoah National Park, Virginia, at 4,050 feet, showing how these older mountains rely on openness, not elevation. The park's establishment in 1935 involved reforestation after extensive farming and logging. Today, much of that land has returned to forest, supporting mixed hardwoods, mountain laurel, and rhododendron. What else? Some of the rocks found here date back over 1 billion years, among the oldest in the state. The park shelters over 200 bird species and 32 species of fish and remains dog friendly, allowing pets in campgrounds and on most trails.

Hawksbill's summit does not rely on steep cliffs. Instead, a stone platform built in the 1930s by the Civilian Conservation Corps marks the top. From here, ridges stretch into the distance in soft blue layers, an effect caused by atmospheric scattering. Skyline Drive connects visitors to trailheads leading to peaks like this.

A journey through time

Pitigliano, Tuscany, Italy

Perched on a tufa ridge in southern Tuscany, Italy, Pitigliano is a small town with a big personality. Its roots stretch back to Etruscan times, and the winding streets still echo the past, from medieval fortifications to Renaissance palaces. Walking through its narrow alleys, you can feel centuries of life carved into the stone, while small piazzas invite pauses for coffee or gelato. This enduring treasure is often called 'Little Jerusalem' for its historic Jewish quarter, where a synagogue and historic cemetery tell stories of a once-thriving community.

Local trattorias serve classic Tuscan dishes, from rich pappardelle with wild boar to creamy pecorino cheeses, making every meal a chance to savor the region. The town's flair comes from its combination of history, architecture, and everyday life—market stalls, church bells, and the chatter of locals. Even a brief stroll through Pitigliano turns into a journey through time, where culture, cuisine, and the simple joy of walking intertwine naturally.

Rock on, Milky Way!

Arch and Milky Way, Alabama Hills, Sierra Nevada, California

In today's image, the granite arches of the Alabama Hills frame the Milky Way over a rugged landscape in California's eastern Sierra Nevada. Famous for its rounded boulders and weathered rock formations, this area formed when molten rock cooled deep underground around 100 million years ago. Water and wind gradually shaped the stone into the smooth shapes seen today. Visitors can explore the natural arches, hike among the rocks, capture photographs of the unique landscape, ride horses or mountain bikes, and enjoy seasonal displays of wildflowers.

With minimal light pollution, the hills are popular for stargazing and night photography. On a clear night, the dense band of stars that forms our galaxy is visible to the naked eye. While it might look like a peaceful desert today, this terrain has played many roles on screen. Since the 1920s, hundreds of movies and television shows have used these hills as a backdrop for westerns and sci-fi adventures, including 'Yellow Sky' with Gregory Peck, 'Django Unchained' by Quentin Tarantino, and the Marvel classic 'Iron Man' by Jon Favreau.

Great Barrier Reef from above, Queensland, Australia

One of the world's greatest natural wonders stretches through the turquoise waters of the Coral Sea off Australia's northeast shoreline. The Great Barrier Reef, running along the coast of Queensland, is the world's largest coral reef system. It is made up of nearly 3,000 individual reefs and hundreds of islands, spanning more than 1,400 miles.

This remarkable marine landscape supports extraordinary biodiversity, including hundreds of coral species, more than 1,600 kinds of fish, as well as sea turtles, rays, seabirds, and reef sharks. Its shallow lagoons, coral cays, and deeper outer reefs create a mosaic found nowhere else on Earth.

Recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, the reef is valued not only for its size and beauty, but also for its ecological importance and deep cultural connections to Australia's First Nations peoples. Today, researchers, communities, and governments work together to protect this fragile ecosystem, helping preserve the reef's complex patterns and vibrant marine life for the future.

Skradinski Buk Waterfall, Krka National Park, Croatia

Water is the architect of Krka National Park in Croatia, shaping emerald pools and layered waterfalls along the Krka River. Today's image highlights Skradinski Buk, the park's most famous waterfall system, where multiple streams spill over travertine terraces in a dense forest near the village of Lozovac.

Skradinski Buk is not a single waterfall, but a wide cascade of 17 steps stretching nearly half a mile. These terraces form when mineral-rich water flows over moss and stone, slowly creating natural barriers that reshape the river's course. Wooden walkways cross the water, offering close-up views of rushing falls, small islands, and restored watermills that once powered local communities.

Beyond the waterfall complex, Krka National Park protects a network of natural waters and wildlife habitats, making it one of Croatia's most distinctive landscapes—where movement, history, and geology remain deeply intertwined.
