High mountains, deep history

Bormio, Lombardy, Italy

Bormio is a mountain town in northern Italy's Lombardy region, nestled in the Alps near the Stelvio Pass. This location has connected communities across mountain valleys for centuries, shaping how people live and move through the region. Today's image features Bormio's winter landscape, a reflection of its high-altitude setting and enduring bond with the surrounding peaks.

Its strategic position helped Bormio develop a strong civic identity. For many years, it was one of the 'Three Magnificent Communities,' which held local autonomy and served as an administrative center for nearby settlements. The medieval town layout remains visible in its stone buildings and public spaces, including the Kuerc Square, where community decisions were once made. These structures reflect how governance and daily life adapted to the challenges of a mountain environment.

Bormio is also known for its natural hot springs that have been documented since Roman times. Historic bathhouses, such as the Bagni Vecchi, show how thermal waters supported health, social life, and resilience during harsh winters. Today, the town is part of Stelvio National Park, where its history, landscape, and culture continue to be preserved.

Layers of time in Utah

Celebrating 54 years of Capitol Reef National Park

Rock layers formed over millions of years and a massive bend in the Earth's crust give this desert a rare window into geologic history. This is Capitol Reef National Park in Utah, where sandstone cliffs and canyons preserve a striking record of the planet's past. December 18 marks the anniversary of its designation as a national park in 1971. Today's featured image highlights the sandstone monoliths of Cathedral Valley, including the Temple of the Sun, part of this extraordinary, protected landscape.

Capitol Reef takes its name from two defining features: rounded Navajo sandstone domes—within the Waterpocket Fold—that resemble the US Capitol building, and the Fold's ridges that form a 'reef,' which blocked early travel across the desert. Before becoming a national park, the area was designated as a national monument in 1937.

This anniversary also honors the human history linked to this region. Indigenous communities lived along the Fremont River long before pioneer orchards appeared, leaving petroglyphs carved into canyon walls.

Spiegelgracht canal in Amsterdam, Netherlands

Have you ever wondered how canals changed the way cities developed? For thousands of years, people have built canals to transport goods, control water flow, and connect places. From ancient Mesopotamia and Egypt to medieval Europe, they transformed cities like Venice and Bruges into trade hubs. The Netherlands took this even further—by the 17th century, they were designing waterways that shaped cities such as Amsterdam.

It's no wonder Amsterdam is nicknamed the 'Venice of the North.' The city's 60-mile-long network of canals forms part of the UNESCO-listed Canal District. Mostly flanked by roads on both sides, these routes are now used for tourism and recreation. In the center of the city is the Spiegelgracht canal seen in today's image. It is famous for its art galleries, antique shops, and serene reflections that inspired its name, 'Mirror Canal.' As night falls, bridges and trees glow with festive lights, their reflections shimmering across the calm water. With Christmas just around the corner, these canals resemble glowing strings of history—proof that the past still shines bright in the present.

Frozen reflections

Merced River, Yosemite National Park, California

Every masterpiece needs a brushstroke to tie it together. For Yosemite National Park, that stroke is the Merced River—painting reflections of granite cliffs, pine forests, and waterfalls across its canvas. One of the National Wild and Scenic Rivers, this waterway begins high in the Sierra Nevada. It gathers meltwater and winds 145 miles west through Yosemite Valley into California's Central Valley.

Its Spanish name, 'El Río de Nuestra Señora de la Merced,' translates to 'River of Our Lady of Mercy,' and suits it well: it offers both calm and chaos depending on the season. Spring turns the river into Yosemite's main act, as snowmelt sends torrents rushing beneath stone bridges and past roaring waterfalls like Vernal and Nevada Falls. Summer brings a gentler flow that attracts rafters and swimmers. Fall adds a hint of gold as leaves drift downstream, and winter slows everything to a reflective stillness. Interestingly, it feeds Lake McClure, where a ghost town rises when water levels drop in fall and winter. Along its lower stretches once stood Merced Falls, a bustling mill town during the Gold Rush era, now lying quiet.

Where the sky meets Earth

International Mountain Day

Every December 11, we celebrate International Mountain Day, honoring the majestic peaks that shape our planet and the glaciers that support life. From the rolling Alps to the towering Himalayas, mountains cover nearly a quarter of Earth's land and host 15% of the world's population and nearly half of its biodiversity hotspots. Mount Everest, the world's highest peak at over 29,000 feet, stands as a symbol of human aspiration and natural beauty. Its glaciers feed rivers sustaining millions, showing that mountains are more than scenery—they are lifelines.

Glaciers, holding about 70% of the world's fresh water, are melting rapidly due to rising global temperatures. This threatens agriculture, water security, energy production, and the livelihoods of billions. Retreating glaciers and thawing permafrost also heighten hazards like floods, landslides, and erosion, putting communities and infrastructure at risk.

This year, International Mountain Day is themed 'Glaciers matter for water, food, and livelihoods in mountains and beyond,' which emphasizes the urgent need to protect these vital ecosystems. Whether marveling at Everest or hiking a local ridge, the day invites us to reconnect with Earth's vertical landscapes and recognize their essential role in life, climate, and biodiversity.

Where cultures converge

Mosque-Cathedral of Córdoba, Andalusia, Spain

The Mosque-Cathedral of Córdoba is a chronicle of Spain's layered history. It began as a church built by the Germanic Visigoths, before being transformed into a mosque in 784 CE by Abd al-Rahman I, founder of the Umayyad Emirate of Córdoba. Its vast hypostyle hall, a space supported by rows of columns, features the famous red-and-white arches shown here. Today, it contains more than 850 columns, many reused from Roman and earlier Visigothic structures.

During the Christian Reconquista in the 13th century—a campaign spanning centuries to reclaim Iberian territories from Muslim rule—the mosque was converted into a Catholic cathedral. Later, a Renaissance nave was added, blending Gothic, Renaissance, and Baroque styles with Islamic heritage. Today, this UNESCO World Heritage Site attracts millions of visitors fascinated by its unique fusion of art, faith, and history. Despite centuries of modifications, the original mosque's geometric patterns and horseshoe arches remain largely intact, offering a glimpse into Córdoba's multicultural past. The Mosque-Cathedral serves as a remarkable story of coexistence, conquest, and architectural brilliance.

All is calm, all is bright

Christmas lights in Domaso, Lake Como, Italy

When the twinkling reflections on Italy's Lake Como outshine the stars, you know Christmas has docked in Domaso. Once a fishing village, this lakeside town now transforms each winter into a glittering display of holiday cheer, where pastel houses, old churches, and waterfront villas are wrapped in ribbons of light. The result? A picturesque Christmas scene.

The main waterfront, or lungolago, becomes the star attraction. Churches chime with carols, and market stalls pop up selling handmade crafts, warm chestnuts, and enough panettone to keep everyone running on sweet energy until the New Year.

At the heart of it all is community. Residents around Lake Como take pride in making the season special, from organizing live music in the piazza to staging nativity scenes that look straight out of a Renaissance painting. Even visitors feel part of the celebration—after all, nothing says 'Buon Natale' (Merry Christmas) like being handed a steaming cup of vin brulé, or mulled wine, and a smile.

Florida's living wetlands

Celebrating 78 years of Everglades National Park

On Florida's southern tip lies one of the United States' most unusual landscapes. The Everglades is not a typical swamp or river. It is a slow, shallow sheet of water that drifts south across flat grasslands toward Florida Bay, linking forests, marshes, mangroves, and coastal prairies. This subtropical wilderness supports hundreds of species, including alligators, manatees, and the endangered Florida panther. On December 6, 1947, the United States established the Everglades National Park, protecting over 1.5 million acres and shifting conservation toward preserving entire ecosystems rather than isolated landmarks.

Spider webs stretch between reeds, catching light in fine reflections in the image featured today. The park is now a UNESCO World Heritage Site, yet its balance remains fragile: pollution, development, and altered water flow still threaten its habitats. Major restoration efforts, including the Comprehensive Everglades Restoration Plan, aim to restore natural water patterns, reduce pollution, and limit urban expansion. Within this mosaic, over 350 bird species live, both American crocodiles and alligators share its waters, and panthers move through its quiet corridors. The Everglades endures as a working landscape, proof that protection means letting life keep moving.

The city that mapped the stars

Maya site of Copán

In a quiet valley of western Honduras lie the ruins of Copán—a city of the ancient Maya civilization. Its sky served as both compass and calendar, guiding celestial events and shaping temples, rituals, and the rhythm of life. Around 426 CE, K'inich Yax K'uk' Mo', a warrior from the Maya heartland, founded Copán and established its royal dynasty. The city became a center of Maya art, astronomy, and power.

At the heart of Copán stand two monuments—stories in stone—that reflect its artistic and political brilliance: the Hieroglyphic Stairway and Altar Q. The stairway rises in 63 carved steps covered with more than 2,000 glyphs—the longest Maya inscription ever found—recording reigns, ceremonies, and ambitions that shaped the city's power. Altar Q, standing beside it, translates that history into sculpture, portraying 16 rulers in sequence, preserving the story of a dynasty in stone. Rediscovered in the 19th century and designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1980, Copán remains one of the finest achievements of the ancient Maya. Today, it endures in the precision of its stonework—proof that art can outlast even the world that built it.
